DFI JOINS ORGANIZATIONS NATIONWIDE ENCOURAGING A COMMITTMENT TO SAVING DURING “WASHINGTON SAVES WEEK”

Washington joins national campaign aimed to help residents “Build Wealth, Not Debt”

Olympia – The Washington State Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) is working with the Washington Jump$tart Coalition and many other state agencies, non-profit organizations and financial institutions to promote Washington Saves Week as part of the seventh annual national America Saves Week campaign.

“In a time when we all are striving to make our dollars do more and go farther, it’s more important than ever to ensure we are setting aside funds for tomorrow,” DFI Director Scott Jarvis said. “Making savings automatic makes sure it happens, makes it easier to plan around and makes it easier to continue. Even if you have to start small, with five or 10 dollars, that small start can make a big difference later.”

America Saves is a national campaign involving more than 1,000 non-profit, government, and corporate groups that encourages individuals and families to save money and build personal wealth. Organizations throughout Washington are coordinating Saves Week activities aimed at offering Washington residents savings resources and education.

Understanding that having emergency savings, retirement funds and being able to manage one’s debt are crucial to Washington residents’ personal financial security, Governor Jay Inslee has proclaimed Feb. 25-March 2, 2013 Washington Saves Week. http://www.dfi.wa.gov/financial-education/wa-saves/pdf/2013-proclamation.pdf

The campaign theme “Set a Goal. Make a Plan. Save Automatically.” is aimed at reminding consumers to utilize the automatic payroll deduction options at their place of employment to begin building an emergency fund, create a retirement fund or develop a targeted savings fund for their future.

We invite all Washington residents to participate in Saves Week, Feb. 25- March 2, 2013 by visiting www.americasavesweek.org and enrolling to be an American Saver. Submit your Washington Saves Week event or find an event in your area at http://dfi.wa.gov/financial-education/calendar.htm.

If your organization wants to support Washington Saves and promote the campaign, the Saves Week organizers offer a variety of promotional materials at http://americasavesweek.org/download-materials .

A few ways your organization can get involved include:

  • Distribute America Saves fliers and brochures and display America Saves posters
  • Set up display/area for reading/research and Web access to saving, debt reduction and wealth building
  • Host motivational workshops and topic seminars for patrons and employees
  • Encourage enrollment as a Saver
  • Place America Saves Week article(s) in employees newsletter and patron news
  • Enclose an America Saves flier as a payroll stuffer
  • Place a link to America Saves/Washington Saves on Web site and internal network

To learn more about the campaign and register, visit the national Web site www.americasavesweek.org or Washington Saves Week at http://www.dfi.wa.gov/financial-education/wa-saves/default.htm.

If you would like a presenter to come to your site, DFI and/or Washington Jump$tart member organizations can assist with finding a speaker. Send a request to Lyn Peters at DFI (lyn.peters@dfi.wa.gov), the Washington Jump$tart Coalition (wajumpstart@gmail.com) or contact Amy O’Donnell (aodonnell@wscpa.org).

Together we can show our support and commitment to helping our community members “Start Small, Think Big” and “Build Wealth, Not Debt.”

IRS UPDATE: Payroll Tax Rate Change

Dear Business Organization:

As you know, Congress passed and the President has signed into law some tax law changes earlier this week. The payroll tax rates were not affected by this week’s legislation, which means the temporary two-percentage-point payroll tax cut in effect for 2011 and 2012 has now expired.

I wanted to be sure and get the information below to you as soon as possible.

Below is the news release which was posted today to IRS.gov. Within the release is a link to Notice 1036, which contains the percentage method income tax withholding tables, the new Social Security withholding rate, and related information that most employers need to implement these changes. IRS is asking employers to adjust their payroll systems as soon as possible, but not later than Feb. 15, 2013.

Please make sure your members are aware of the new law and the Notice1036, which contains the information employers will need to implement the new rates.

Please continue to monitor www.IRS.gov for the latest updates. As new information becomes available, I will also send it to you directly.

IRS Provides Updated Withholding Guidance for 2013
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Provides-Updated-Withholding-Guidance-for-2013

The Internal Revenue Service today released updated income-tax withholding tables for 2013 reflecting this week’s changes by Congress.

The updated tables, issued today after President Obama signed the changes into law, show the new rates in effect for 2013 and supersede the tables issued on December 31, 2012. The newly revised version of Notice1036 contains the percentage method income-tax withholding tables and related information that employers need to implement these changes.

In addition, employers should also begin withholding Social Security tax at the rate of 6.2 percent of wages paid following the expiration of the temporary two-percentage-point payroll tax cut in effect for 2011 and 2012. The payroll tax rates were not affected by this week’s legislation.

Employers should start using the revised withholding tables and correct the amount of Social Security tax withheld as soon as possible in 2013, but not later than Feb. 15, 2013. For any Social Security tax under-withheld before that date, employers should make the appropriate adjustment in workers’ pay as soon as possible, but not later than March 31, 2013.

Year End Information

Here are some Year End things that you need to be preparing for by December 31, 2012:

  • o If you carry inventory for Resale you MUST do an Inventory Count at least once a year and if you have not done one already please make sure that you do this by the end of the year

Ø W-9-s
  • If you have not already sent me the W-9’s for your Landlord, Sub-Contractor(s)/Independent Contractor(s), Attorney, Professional Services etc please send this information to me ASAP as we are getting ready to work on the 1099’s very soon. We will start to issue the 1099’s in January and once we prepare them and if you have changes we will be charging a $25 per 1099 fee so please get this to us ASAP and avoid the extra fee.

Busines Year End Checklist 2012

Business Year End Checklist 2012

The following is a list of items for your consideration in preparing for a clean year-end.   Once 12/31/12 is over, it will be too late to incorporate or change many of the accounting details that are important to your business. If you have any special needs, concerns, or questions, please contact us right away so that we can provide maximum service to you.

1.        Mileage Logs need to be updated and retained.

2.       Notify Paychex/ADP that health insurance premiums paid by the company for the officers for full year 2012 need to be included on W-2, Box 1.  You must notify Paychex/ADP with the amount before the last payroll of the year.

3.       Report any IRA or 401k payments to Paychex/ADP or whom-ever is your Payroll Processor.

4.       2013 Rate Sheets from Washington State Department of Labor and Industries and Washington State Employment Security Department must be sent to Paychex/ADP right away so that the first payroll of 2013 will be accurate.

5.       Advise us of any asset purchases during 2012.  Accelerated depreciation of these capital purchases may help your tax liability.

6.       If you have any out-of-pocket expenses for the business during 2012, please itemize them so they can be incorporated into your books if you have NOT already provided this to us.

7.       Take a look at your Corporate Minute Book to be sure that you have documented the required minutes of your meetings. If you do not have a Corporate Minute Book please contact us and we can let you know where you can purchase one from.

8.       Payments of $600 or more to individuals or companies that are not incorporated must receive IRS form 1099-MISC no later than 1/31/2013 for Services.  Be sure you have your vendor fill out Form W-9 completely with name, address, Taxpayer Identification No.  The IRS will assess penalties for every 1099 that does not have a correct Taxpayer Identification No or is not filed.  We have attached a W-9 should you need one please have it filled out including a date and signature and return back to our office ASAP so that we can file accurate 1099’s to the IRS and send your vendor copies to you to mail out.  We are not responsible for your failure to provide us with an accurate listing.

9.       Please make sure that if you carry Inventory for Resale that you take an Inventory Count by December 31, 2012 so that we can accurately calculate your Cost of Sales accurately. This is the law.

10.   In addition to the above, be certain that your accounts payable, accounts receivable, and loans   have accurate balances.  Update each employee file with a current and complete W-4 and I-9.  A new W-4 should be filled out for every employee by January 1st, 2013 and given to your payroll processor.

Please note that this is NOT an Exclusive list but just some main items that we feel are overlooked by clients. If you have specific requirements or reports that need to filed it is your responsibility to file these reports or make arrangements with our office to have these filed

Please call us right away with any questions, so that we can provide you with a clean cut-off at year end.
